4e/21. Valentin Le Campion (ROS/F, 1903-1952) W. CHR.
VAN DER KUYLEN, X2, 65 x 48, c.1930.
Like Lébédeff (see 3g/20), Le Campion was of Russian origin and settled in Paris where he became an important illustrator and graphic artist. His ex-libris are amongst the finest wood engravings of the period, as can be seen from this delicate piece. |
4e/22. Eric Gill (GB, 1882-1940) JACOB WEISS, X2,
102 x 66, 1935.
A major British artist of the 20th century, Eric Gill produced a large graphic opus, of which over 50 bookplates. His work for the Golden Cockerell Press and the Cranach Press in Germany, as well as his design of type (Perpetua, Gill and Sans-serif, amongst others) remain timeless. His work is at the same time deeply religious and deeply sensual, as his ‘Eve’ for Jacob Weiss witnesses. This bookplate was item # 198 of the retrospective of Gill’s engraved work shown at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1963. |

4e/23. John Buckland Wright (GB, 1897-1954) MARK
SEVERIN, C2, 86 x 48, c.1940.
Viz. BNL #179
Buckland Wright came from New Zealand to England as a child and studied architecture, but he settled in Paris to study art and worked as assistant in Hayter’s Atelier 17 for ten years. He made distinguished graphic work, especially for the Golden Cockerell Press (1936-1954), and some thirty ex-libris. BNL (op. cit.) comments: perhaps the best of them is the copper engraved mermaid and merman design for the Belgian bookplate artist, Mark Severin. |
4e/24. Italo Zetti (I, 1913-1978) GIORGIO BALBI, X2,
94 x 60, 1946.
As we have noted, Bramanti (see 3g/9) was an important Italian wood engraver, but Italo Zetti, his junior by 16 years, reached even higher peaks of graphic expression, with strongly contrasted, delicate images. This ‘perverse chemistry’ has become a classic amongst ex-eroticis. |

4e/25. Peter Wolbrand (D, 1886-1972) FRANCESCO
CARBONARA, X2, 57 x 50, 1949.
Viz. Blum p. 7 ill.
This lesser-known Hamburg-born graphic artist and designer has left a substantial ex-libris opus, and this is certainly one of his most successful plates. The stylised figure and composition is very much in the post-2nd World War style. |
4e/26. P. Leraud (F) SERGE GOLIFMAN, C2, 35 x 70, c.1960.
Little is known about the artist who made this ex-eroticis for the collector Golifman. It is, however, quite typical of the French school of engraving of the post-war period. |

4e/27. Pierre-Yves Trémois (F,*1921) ROGER PEYREFITTE,
C2 + C, 80 x 52, 1972.
Viz. GMN p. 245
Trémois is one of the best known modern French graphic artists and illustrators. He made this plate for the famous author Peyrefitte (1907-?), who never concealed his sexual preferences. It was illustrated as frontispiece to the Peyrefitte sale of 20. 12. 1976. |
4e/28. Fleming Rud Larsen (DK) J. VILS PEDERSEN, X3/3,
155 x 80, 1971.
Viz Blum p. 167, ill.
This Danish artist and illustrator made a number of ex-libris. This one for the collector Vils Pedersen has often been reproduced in books on ex-eroticis. |

4e/29. Pam Georg Rueter (NL,*1906) LARS STOLT, X2, 116
x 83, 1973.
Viz. Blum p.135, ill.
Rueter is one of the finest Dutch wood engravers, and his large ex-libris opus has extraordinary consistence of quality. He has engraved a few ex-eroticis, but they are only a very small part of his graphics. |
4e/30. Mark Severin (B, 1906-1987) ANTHONY PINCOTT, C2,
88 x 84, 1981.
The Belgian artist Severin was one of the most outstanding engravers of his generation, specialised in fine minute work, including postage stamps. He made close to five hundred ex-libris, of which a great number are on erotic subjects, such as this one. |
